The mission of United Hmong with Disabilities (UHD) is to build a disability justice movement within the Hmong community to create a future that is inclusive of Hmong people with disabilities.
| About Us
United Hmong with Disabilities (UHD) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to advancing disability advocacy, building inclusive leadership, and uplifting the voices of Hmong youth and adults with disabilities, as well as Hmong parents of children with disabilities. UHD was founded to address the unique challenges Hmong individuals with disabilities face within the Hmong community, bridging the gap between cultural and societal stigmas and the rights and resources needed to foster self-determination and empowerment.
At UHD, we envision a future where disability is embraced as part of our community's diversity and strength. By challenging cultural stigmas and eliminating barriers, we can create a Hmong society where individuals with disabilities are not only included but are respected and valued for their unique contributions. Our commitment is to cultivate spaces where all Hmong individuals with disabilities can access the resources, support, and opportunities they need to succeed. Through collective action, advocacy, and compassion, we strive to build a legacy of inclusivity—where every disabled Hmong person in the US can lead a life of dignity, purpose, and fulfillment.

We believe that a strong foundation of knowledge, advocacy, and support can shift perspectives, eliminate barriers, and foster solidarity across all communities. Here’s a look at how we accomplish this:
- Disability Advocacy and Awareness
We challenge misconceptions, cultural stigmas, and institutional ableism that Hmong individuals with disabilities encounter. Through public advocacy campaigns, educational materials, trainings and community events, UHD raises awareness about the importance of disability rights and justice. - Training and Leadership Development
UHD offers leadership training and workshops that equip Hmong youth, adults with disabilities, and parents of children with disabilities with the skills and confidence to advocate for their rights. By developing their leadership, we empower them to actively participate in shaping policies, services, and practices that impact their lives. - Resources and Support Services
From connecting individuals and families to essential resources to providing guidance on navigating healthcare, education, and employment systems, UHD supports individuals with disabilities throughout their journeys. UHD is here to provide culturally responsive services tailored to the Hmong community’s specific needs. - Research and Community Initiatives
UHD engages in research and partnerships to understand and address the challenges Hmong individuals with disabilities face, driving initiatives that reflect our commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion. Through projects such as the Hmong Disability Dictionary and UHD national conferences, we bring together community voices and establish a shared understanding of disability within the Hmong culture.
| Why UHD?
UHD stands as a critical voice in the intersection of disability rights and Hmong cultural advocacy, dedicated to building a community of resilience, respect, and representation. By centering the needs and experiences of Hmong people with disabilities, UHD contributes to a movement that enriches not only the Hmong community but also strengthens societal values of inclusivity and equity for all.
| History |The United Hmong with Disabilities (UHD) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting disability advocacy and building the leadership of Hmong youth and adults with disabilities, as well as Hmong parents of children with disabilities.
UHD’s origin started as a grassroots effort with a small group of disabled Hmong folks during the summer of 2019. They realized that there was so much more to talk about and that more information, education and conversations are needed in the Hmong community about disability. Through their shared visions of connecting and supporting one another to address the cultural and historical lived experiences that intersect their identities, they founded United Hmong with Disabilities (UHD). In 2023, UHD was incorporated as a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission to build a disability justice movement within the Hmong community to create a future that is inclusive of Hmong people with disabilities. UHD centers its work to address and dismantle ableism, promote disability justice and disability rights in partnership with other social and racial justice movements, provide and connect Hmong families and Hmong people with disabilities to resources and support services, and provide training and research that foster diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion within the Hmong community and broader community. |
